The Fort Myer area is in the middle of a major metro area, near Washington DC and Arlington, Virginia, and part of Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall. Off post housing is readily available near this and several other local military bases. You have the option to use your BAH in two ways; by renting on post or renting/purchasing a home of your own off post.

The average price of a home in the Arlington area is about $577,000, compared to Virginia's state average of $250,000. The greater Washington D.C.-Arlington area is about $384,000. Rent is usually between $1,400 and $2,000 per month, determined by number of bedrooms.

Arlington and the surrounding areas are highly populated and offer a wide variety of housing for every size family. Alexandria, Springfield, McLean, Annandale, Falls Church, and Fairfax are all within a 30 minute commute of Fort Myer. Washington D.C. is just a 15-20 minute drive across the Potomac River.

Columbia is one of Maryland's most populated areas. It's a unique city in that it is made up of 10 villages which act as self-sustaining sub-divisions. On Post Housing

Fort Myer on post housing is very limited, and applicants may be placed on a waiting list until appropriate space becomes available. There are 89 units available for the base population of over 13,000 military personnel and family. Most housing is reserved for Key and Essential Personnel or command grade officers.
