Local Sports

Washington DC has a thriving major league sports establishment, with top-flight teams like the Washington Nationals (baseball), Washington Wizards (basketball),Washington Redskins (football), Washington Capitals (hockey), DC United (soccer), and Washington Mystics (women's basketball), making this city one of the few to have a full slate of major sports teams. Less well known are the Washington Kastles (team tennis), Baltimore-Washington Eagles (Australian rules football), and Washington Slayers (rugby). There are also eight colleges in the District with sports programs.

Sports you can join include the Marine Corps Marathon, held in fall, the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon, held in spring, and the National Cherry Blossom 10 Miler and Army 10 Miler. There are also many local sports leagues.

Hunting: The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries regulates hunting in the state, and licenses for bear, deer, elk, turkey, crow, groundhog, grouse, quail, pheasants, rabbit, squirrel, dove, woodcock, snipe, rail, goose, and teal. Trappable furbearers include bobcat, coyote, fox, opossum, skunk, and raccoon.

Fishing in Virginia (licensed by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries) includes bass, crappie, bluegill, flier, sunfish, warmouth, perch, pike, trout, catfish, shad, carp, gar, and drum. Check regulations carefully; certain species of herring are illegal. Marine fishing (which is handled by the Virginia Marine Resources Commission) includes amberjack, american eel, various kinds of drum, sea bass, catfish, bluefish, cobia, trout, groupers, mackerel, scup, certain kinds of shark, shad, and spadefish.
