UNITS

Fort Myer is home to many servicemen that work in the National Capital Region. Major units based at Fort Myer include the first and fourth battalions of the 3rd U. S. Infantry Regiment (except for A Company), the U.S. Army Band, and the Fife and Drum Corps. The A Company of the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment is stationed nearby at Fort McNair.

3d INFANTRY, REGIMENT (The Old Guard) 703-696-3003
The 3rd Infantry is the oldest, longest serving US Army unit, established in 1783 as the 1st American Regiment, the first unit created after the disbanding of the Continental Army, and later redesignated in a later reorganization. The unit was given the nickname The Old Guard by General Winfield Scott, the Grand Old Man of the Army, the longest serving American soldier. Although today generally considered a ceremonial unit, battalions of 3rd Infantry Regiment have the honor of serving in every war the US has ever fought, as well as most of the non-wartime combat operations, including a tour of duty in the recent Afghanistan conflict.
The Old Guard became the principal ceremonial US Army for the capitol in 1948, and has since provided soldiers for several high profile units, including the Tomb Guards, the Presidentís Escort, the Continental Colors, Presidential Salute Battery, Old Guard FIfe and Drum Corps, and Caisson Platoon.
